Abingdon, Va. (November 16, 2023) – United Way of Southwest Virginia has been named Virginia’s 2023 “Community Star” by the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH).
On the third Thursday of November, NOSORH leads National Rural Health Day (NRHD), an annual celebration that shines a light on those who serve the vital health needs of the nearly 61 million people living in rural America. United Way of Southwest Virginia will be featured prominently on the official NRHD website, PowerOfRural.org, on November 16, 2023, alongside other Community Stars from across the nation. This platform will showcase each Star’s remarkable dedication and contributions to rural healthcare.
"We are honored to be named Virginia's Community Star for 2023 for our work in the recovery process in multiple Southwest Virginia localities after devastating flooding in 2021 & 2022," said Mary Anne Holbrook, VP of Community Impact, United Way of Southwest Virginia. "Through our work with donors, stakeholders, and other agencies, we are well on the way to returning a sense of normalcy to those affected by these disasters. The "Power of Rural" translates in our work to 'Rural does not mean less.' The power of rural is quick, trusted relationships that share an unwavering commitment to their communities."
In 2015, the Community Star Recognition Program was established in conjunction with NRHD to tell the stories of the people and organizations who make a difference in rural communities. Since then, over 300 inspiring rural stars have been honored nationwide on NRHD.
