Southwest Virginia COVID-19 Advisory Council Announces First Major Disbursement of Funds

(Abingdon, VA) April 23, 2020 – The Southwest Virginia COVID-19 Advisory Council announced today the first major disbursement of funds raised. In partnership with Feeding Southwest Virginia, the Advisory Council will provide a total of $50,000 in food relief to 1,000 families across Southwest Virginia. United Way of Southwest Virginia will provide 1,000 $50 food vouchers to Feeding Southwest Virginia.

Based on recent feedback from more than 150 health and human service organizations and childcare agencies, the greatest needs in the region caused by the pandemic are food insecurity, followed closely by child care.

According to Travis Staton, President and CEO of United Way of Southwest Virginia, “Members of the Advisory Council are closely assessing the region’s greatest needs during these uncertain times. Through our ongoing partnerships across Southwest Virginia, as well as newly-made partnerships, we are able to assist the most vulnerable citizens in our region and provide both immediate and long-term relief.”

Pamela Irvine, President and CEO of Feeding Southwest Virginia, stated, “We are so happy to partner with United Way of Southwest Virginia in these efforts to provide food vouchers to so many families in the region. The pandemic has and will continue to put a financial strain on individuals, making it difficult for vulnerable populations to provide the basic need of food.”

Feeding Southwest Virginia will distribute these equitably across the region through local food pantries. All the pantries receiving the vouchers are USDA certified locations that have eligibility guidelines and tracking mechanisms in place to ensure these get into the hands of the most vulnerable populations experiencing the effects of the pandemic.

Counties and cities to receive food vouchers include: Bland County, Buchanan County, Carroll County, Dickenson County, Giles County, Grayson County, Lee County, Pulaski County, Russell County, Scott County, Smyth County, Tazewell County, Washington County, Wise County, Galax City and Norton City.
